Starting the spring season on the bench can feel frustrating, but it’s also one of the best opportunities to grow as a player. The athletes who earn starting roles aren’t just the most talented—they’re the most intentional about improving.
- GET CLARITY. Ask your coach directly: “What specific things do I need to improve to earn more minutes?” Push for concrete feedback—first touch, positioning, fitness, awareness, or decision-making. Write those down and turn them into a simple weekly plan. Set up your personal training plan at the top of your TRACK page!
- TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR DEVELOPMENT. At home, train with purpose. Spend 10–15 minutes daily on first touch (two-touch against a wall, different surfaces), 5–10 minutes on ball mastery (quick touches, both feet), and 10 minutes on finishing (reps from different angles). Add short bursts of speed and agility—cones, ladders, or quick change-of-direction work—to improve game sharpness.
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF. In practice, jump into small-sided games with the strongest players. Play one- and two-touch when possible, check your shoulder before receiving, and focus on proactive decisions. Don’t avoid mistakes—learn from them in real time.
- SHOW COMMITMENT AND CONSISTENCY. Set the tone in warmups: sprint hard, communicate, track back, and compete in every drill. Coaches notice players who respond to feedback, put in extra work, and bring energy every day. Control what you can control—and you give yourself the best chance to earn your spot.
Even if you don’t start this season, you’re setting the groundwork for your growth for the future. Coaches will notice your dedication, your teammates will appreciate your commitment, and YOU will continue to love the game.
