Imagine your coach brings the team in during the middle of a training session and asks everyone to rank their coachability on a scale of 1–10. You think to yourself: I’m an 8, 9, maybe even a 10. You listen when your coach gives feedback. You don’t argue or make excuses. You stay positive and say, “Got it, Coach.” But does that actually make you coachable?
There’s another part of the equation: What do you do with the feedback?
Making an adjustment is what turns feedback into development.
Feedback --> Adjust --> Improvement
Being coachable doesn’t mean you immediately fix every mistake. Soccer doesn’t work that way. Learning takes repetition, and changing a habit can take time. What matters is your response. Can you recognize what needs to change? Can you make an adjustment on the next rep? Can you stay focused on it even after your coach walks away?
The most coachable players take ownership of that process. They don’t simply hear feedback. They actively try to apply it. And you don’t need a coach standing next to you to practice this.
When you train on your own, the ball gives you feedback constantly. A heavy first touch tells you something. Running into a cone while dribbling tells you something. A pass bouncing awkwardly off the wall tells you something.
In the Techne app, drill videos and descriptions give you a starting point for how to perform a skill. From there, pay attention to what happens on every rep. Was your touch too heavy? Adjust it. Was your pass inaccurate? Think about your technique and try again. Did you lose control at speed? Slow it down, clean it up, then build the speed back.
Coachability is a skill you can practice. It’s the ability to listen, recognize, adjust, and keep working. So the next time you receive feedback from a coach, a teammate, or even the ball itself, don’t just ask, Did I hear it? Ask yourself: What am I going to do with it?
