A major change is coming to youth soccer in the United States.
U.S. Soccer and US Youth Soccer (USYS) have announced that they are integrating, following a vote by USYS State Associations on August 29. Beginning September 1, the organizations will start a two-year process bringing USYS, which registers nearly 2.7 million players annually, into U.S. Soccer.
For players and families, the stated goal is straightforward: make soccer easier to access and navigate and create clearer opportunities for players to develop and reach their potential.
Over time, that could mean stronger connections between local soccer and the broader development pathway, more resources reaching communities, and more opportunities for players to find the environment that matches their ability and ambitions.
But greater access to development opportunities also puts something important in the hands of the player: being ready for them.
Team training matters. So does what you do between practices.

Coaches can also use Techne to extend development beyond team sessions by assigning training directly to their players.
As U.S. Soccer works to create clearer pathways for players across the country, more players may gain opportunities to develop, compete, and be identified.
What happens when those opportunities arrive still depends on the player.
